Watching Manta rays feeding for free… The big island, Kona

There are quite a few ways to view manta rays on the big island here in Hawaii. You can head out on a dive or snorkeling excursion where these majestic animals swim near you. The cost varies according to tour, with snorkeling the cheaper. Divers requirements and prerequisites for tank and certifications can get you under the Mantas. Knowledge of snorkeling and prior experience or the ability to enter the water at night and feel confident in your guide will bring above the Manta feeds.

However, if you are on a tight budget, there are ways to see the rays for free. As you can see, they really put on a show.  Not very far from Kona town, about 6 miles south is a spectacular place where the lights draw the subsistence fish toward a resort feeding area. This area was established many years ago, and the rays have an easy feeding ground.

The place where we went to see this happen was called the Outrigger resort. We took a bus after downloading schedules from the Hele-on. Busses are free here in Hawaii. We arrived prior to sunset to secure a free deck view. The bus currently goes to a main terminal from Kona, and you connect with the south bus. Careful here and check the schedules or call dispatch because the south bus runs until about 9pm every other hour. That’s a six mile walk.

Our entire outing was free, and we are going back tomorrow.  Not only for the Manta, but they are having cultural talks the last Tuesday of every month. Also, check the website and make some calls to the Outrigger resort. They have informative speakers and activities for all.
